District 22 Mira Mesa Ospreys (V-22)

Mira Mesa HS                          Michael Gapasin

The V-22 Osprey is a joint service multirole combat aircraft utilizing tiltrotor technology to combine the vertical performance of a helicopter with the speed and range of a fixed-wing aircraft. With its rotors in vertical position, it can take off, land and hover like a helicopter. Once airborne, it can convert to a turboprop airplane capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight.

This combination results in global reach capabilities that allow the V-22 to fill an operational niche unlike any other aircraft.

Post 201 Monte Vista Vigilantes (A-5)

Monte Vista HS                       Craig Neu

One of the largest and heaviest aircraft ever accepted for service aboard U.S. Navy carriers. Production began in 1956, and it entered squadron service in June 1961. It was redesignated the A-5 and fully deployed by August 1962, when the USS Enterprise, the Navy’s first nuclear aircraft carrier, made its inaugural cruise.

Changing defense strategies marked a change of focus away from carrier-based, heavy-attack squadrons. In 1964, all the Vigilantes were reconfigured as reconnaissance aircraft and designated RA-5C.  RA-5Cs served throughout the Vietnam War and were retired from service in 1979.

Post 332 Ramona Patriots

Ramona HS                              Steve Diamond

For nearly forty years, one air-defense system has protected the airspace above U.S. forces. Continuously upgraded since introduction, today the Patriot missile system protects against the full spectrum of flying threats, from ballistic missiles to consumer-grade quadcopter drones.

The design of Patriot goes back as far as 1965, when then secretary of defense Robert McNamara authorized development of a new air-defense missile, SAM-D. SAM-D was set to replace the Nike Hercules surface-to-air missile systems and protect against medium- to high-altitude threats.

Post 479 Scripps Ranch Phantoms (F-4)

Scripps Ranch HS                 Dan Bailey

In service since 1960, the U.S. F-4 Phantom would come to define third generation military aviation and would serve as America’s prime fighter jet throughout the Vietnam War until its replacement by the F-15 Eagle from 1976. The F-4 was designed as a high performance twin engine heavy fighter, fulfilling a complementary role to the lighter F-5, and the Phantom’s export was restricted to high level U.S. allies such as Japan, West Germany, Iran and Israel.
